Stephanie Sparling Williams is a black feminist theorist, an Assistant Curator at the Addison Gallery of American Art, and Visiting Scholar at Phillips Andover. She holds a Doctorate in American Studies and Ethnicity from the University of Southern California (USC) and a Certificate in Visual Studies, also from USC. Her scholarly work is invested in modern and contemporary art histories, with a particular focus on the direct address, performance, conceptual, and feminist art making practices of women identified artists of color. Other research interests include auto-ethnographic approaches to visual studies, critical theory, institutional critique, and phenomenology.

Currently, she is working on a monograph of artist Lorraine O’Grady’s work, and on several exhibition projects. She also teaches two classes at Phillips Academy in Andover: ART400 Curating the Addison’s Collection (Fall) and ART465 What is America and American Art? (Spring).
